Hi Everybody, and happy Tuesday!
As we are continuing the countdown for Jimmy Eat World’s newest album Surviving, we are going to discuss their album Chase this Light, which came out in 2007. From a lot of the time I’ve spent reading comments and forums, I’m aware that the album Chase this Light isn’t a big fan favorite, because it comes across as too “pop-rock” sounding… basically it didn’t have the same feel as Futures, or even Bleed American.
However, I loved this album when it first came out. I like how the lyrics of the song tell a deeper, more melancholy and pessimistic story in juxtaposition to the upbeat and high energy music paired with it. On a random note, I also love the close up picture of a peacock feather as the cover art. It’s abstract, but also really cool 👌
Even though I’m not as big of a fan of the album as I used to be, there are still some great songs, such as these honorable mentions:
- “Let It Happen”
- “Electable (Give It Up)”
- “Feeling Lucky”
- “Here It Goes”
There are still a few songs that I listen to on repeat after all this time, and are also some of my all time favorites from the album. So sit back, relax (or maybe even listen to these songs during your exercise routine, since they are high energy songs), but most importantly, enjoy the music 😉
This song is fun, upbeat and a great start to the album. High energy guitar and drums, and the lyrics are loud and in your face, which fits this song perfectly.
“I’m the one who gets away/
I’m a New Jersey success story.”
I always thought this was an interesting lyric since they’re originally from Arizona, but I still love the sentiment behind the lines. The idea of getting out of the place where you grew up, to do more learning and growing, and eventually, becoming one of the success stories of the city. Granted, this is a very romantic view, but if you listen to the song, you’ll hear this idea explored a little bit more
2. “Always Be”
I loved this song when I heard it for the first time, and the music video is cute. It’s a song about the ups and downs of young love, as well as playing around with the idea of “the one who got away”. At least, I got some underlying vibes of that theme throughout the song.
3. “Carry You”
The lyrics in this song are so memorable, I can sit here and pretty much play through the entire song in my head.
“I can never be the one that you want/
So here’s to living in the moment/
Cause it passed”.
Coupled with Jim’s vocals, it adds a whole new dimension to the song.
4. “Chase This Light”
I love how this song started off with just Jim’s vocals, and then steadily added other instruments throughout the song. Plus, I love the lyric, “The beauty is in what isn’t said”.
These next couple of songs are my all time favorites from Chase This Light. Both songs have awesome lyrics, and the musical moments in them just make the songs catchy and beautiful overall.
