Blog #6: I Ramble About Movies

Hi everybody, I hope you’ve had a great week! Happy Friday!

When you are reading this, I will be getting ready to watch some Drum Corps perform as the DCI season has begun!

Not gonna lie, I’ve actually been having a lot of fun these past couple of weeks! I got to see a good old friend of mine, celebrated my birthday, went out to eat at a great pizza place I haven’t been to in a while, and actually went to the theater to see some movies. I usually don’t watch movies in theaters because it’s pretty expensive, but I made an exception with these two movies. Plus, with all the buzz around the movie Yesterday (it’s the one about a world where suddenly, the Beatles don’t exist and nobody remembers them, except for one guy, who becomes famous because he keeps “writing” all these great songs), I may want to head back to the theater, it’s crazy 😂. Usually, there aren’t that many movies that come out that I’m interested in, but this summer there seems to be a great selection!

As I was saying, I’ve seen two movies in the past couple of weeks: Rocketman (the Elton John Biopic that I’ve been wanting to see since it came out a while ago) and Toy Story 4 (Such a cute movie, and still can’t believe I watched it opening weekend, cause I’m not someone who usually does haha). I enjoyed both movies overall, for different reasons.

Rocketman had great music (obviously, cause it’s Elton John, how could there not be great music?) but I also learned a lot more about Elton John in the early stages of his career. During the duration of my lifetime, Elton John to me is the guy who wrote the music for The Lion King, has been married with kids, and had some great songs throughout his career. To be honest, I never even heard of Bernie Taupin until Rocketman. It’s funny because when I talked about Rocketman with my mom, she told me how she and her friends saw Elton John in 1972 (I think), right before they broke up. It seems to be common knowledge to most people that Bernie Taupin wrote Elton John’s songs… unless you’re me 🤣 Something else I never thought about is with his career having started up during the 70’s, he would also be participating in all the drugs and alcohol, just like a lot of musicians during that era. Also, I gotta say congrats to him for being sober for twenty-eight years, because that’s quite the accomplishment. I mean, he’s been sober longer than I’ve been alive! Overall, I enjoyed Rocketman, the acting was great, the story was interesting, and the musical element made it even better.

Toy Story 4, on the other hand, is the latest movie in a franchise that has been around my entire life and grew up alongside me. Toy Story 3 was the perfect example of this, as it came out the summer right before my senior year of high school, so to me, it seemed like the end of an era. When I saw Toy Story 3, I thought it was the perfect ending to the Toy Story franchise, so when I heard that Toy Story 4 was going to be released this year, I was excited, but also hesitant. How could you top the emotional impact of Toy Story 3? The answer is, you don’t, which I feel is what happened with Toy Story 4. I enjoyed the movie, and it still had emotional scenes in the movie, but it definitely didn’t try to outdo Toy Story 3; it just focused on telling the story of the characters that we have grown to love. It gave the backstory on what happened with Bo Peep since we last saw her, and also explored Woody’s conflict of being a good toy for Bonnie, but also figuring out his purpose for himself. The movie is as funny and entertaining as ever, and I loved the cast of new characters added for this movie.
